Nate had Friday the 23rd off for Pioneer Day (for those of you not from Utah, July 24th is the day the pioneers arrived in Salt Lake). I always think of it as a bonus holiday because having not grown up in Utah, I’m not used to it being a day off. Friday morning, Nate actually had a quick work meeting, then we went up to the Albion Basin in Little Cottonwood Canyon. We didn’t have enough time to go on a real hike, but we drove up and saw some of the wildflowers the area is famous for (this was where we had tried to go on the 4th but it wasn’t open yet because of snow). We walked around for a while looking at the different kinds and colors of flowers, and Bennett found a big stick he liked carrying around.
After our walk in the Albion Basin, we met up with our friends Jonathan, Laura, and Grace at Snowbird ski resort to do some of the summer activities they have. Nate and I first took a trip down the alpine slide, then waited in line FOREVER for the zipline. Grace and Bennett went in the bounce house while Nate and Jonathan did the climbing wall, but Bennett wasn’t very adventurous and didn’t even jump, just sat by the edge and crawled across a couple times. We took a tram ride up to the top of the mountain and enjoyed the great view – I was amazed how connected the different canyons are when you can see them – we could see American Fork Canyon (which is fairly close to our house), Heber City, the Salt Lake Valley, and up to Alta ski resort. Nate went on the ropes course and I decided to try out the bungy trampoline – not sure it was worth the 30-minute wait and embarrassment of being the only adult, but it was fun, and more difficult than I expected.
After spending that evening with some of Nate’s friends, we were exhausted on Saturday and mostly just relaxed. We did make it up to Sandy to see some fireworks, and took turns trying to get a good fireworks picture.
