Portofino {May 19}

For our last day on the cruise, we splurged and did an official shore excursion through the cruise line. Some of our friends had gotten on the ship earlier than we did (the cruise had staggered boarding days) and when stopped in Genoa, Italy, they did the shore excursion to Portofino and loved it. We followed their advice and were glad we did – we took a bus on a beautiful drive from Genoa to Santa Margherita, then a boat from there to Portofino – a little town surrounding a small harbor. It was beautiful! The harbor and buildings and pathways were so pretty, and it was a nice relaxing town to visit. We walked up to the town’s church, then mostly just walked around the little streets and to the little shops, ate their famous focaccia bread, and of course, some gelato.

View from the boat as we traveled from Santa Margherita to Portofino, and me with our friends on the boat – it was just a little windy!

The sun finally came out as we left and the ocean turned this gorgeous shade of blue!

Genova

When we got back from our shore excursion, we ventured off to find a McDonald’s so we could check our email and check in on the boys. After trekking through most of the city, we finally found it, bought a strawberry shake, and realized you had to have an Italian cell phone # to get access to the free wi-fi (they text you an access code). Lame. It did give us the chance to see the city a little bit though.

We walked along the water for a ways and saw this “pirate ship”  - this picture was mostly for Bennett & Ryan.

The crest of Genova on the light post, and a striped church (we ended up seeing a very similar one in Marseilles the next day)
