Less than a month after we moved to Luxembourg, we drove to Cologne Germany’s Christmas market, and stopped to see Burg Eltz on our way home. It was closed for the winter, but it looked amazing and we put it on our list of places to visit later. We decided to hike to the castle from a small town nearby, and were glad we did. The kids enjoyed throwing rocks in the river as we hiked and watching for the castle.
Burg Eltz was definitely one of our favorite castles. It was built 850 years ago, and has remained in the same family that whole time. Many of the furnishings are the original ones from the last 8 centuries, and unlike many of the castles we have visited, it has never fallen into ruin and been (or needed to be) restored. It sits on the top of a large rock but is down in a valley. We loved the architecture on the outside and the tour of the rooms inside the castle, and of the treasury and armory. The boys were pretty well entertained as we toured through, but Eliza had to be encouraged with some skittles, especially when we wouldn’t let her go into the roped-off areas.

I feel like I need you to post a map each time you post an adventure so I can see geographically where you went :) Looks like a cool place.
