Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving day itself is hard when you live overseas. It isn’t celebrated at all here, and seeing our friends and especially families gathering to celebrate makes us feel a little homesick. Fortunately, we have a great group of American friends here and we had been planning a Thanksgiving celebration for a while. Since it’s not a holiday, husbands had to work and kids had school on Thanksgiving day. We decided to celebrate the day itself by going downtown to the Luxembourg Christmas Market (more on that later). With no Thanksgiving, Christmas celebrations are allowed to start a little earlier here. We all gathered on Saturday at the Mullins’ for a delicious Friendsgiving meal. The Oates ordered the turkey a few weeks before from a restaurant supply store, and the 23-pound bird barely fit in their fridge, and later oven, but they made it work and it was delicious! Definitely looked a little more raw and natural than the ones we get at the grocery store in the US.

Megan had the great idea to turn on a movie for the kids when we got there, so the adults got to eat in peace (mostly – Eliza wasn’t interested in the movie and sat on my lap to eat) while the kids watched their show, and they had their turn to eat after. We had a delicious spread with pretty much every Thanksgiving food you can think of – turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, rolls, sweet potatoes, green beans, salad, veggie tray, spinach artichoke dip, jello salad, and I’m sure more that I can’t think of right now. We hung out for a while, then finished it off with apple pie, pumpkin pie, banana cream pie, and pumpkin bars. We feel very grateful for friends who make a Thanksgiving away from home feel like a real Thanksgiving. We missed our families and wished we could have been with them, but also felt very grateful for the friends who have become like family here.
