Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park

July 9

We’ve tried to take advantage of the mostly-sunny weather the past couple of weeks. Usually this involves picking a park for the day, but sometimes we get a little more adventurous. A couple weeks ago, we met up with our friends and walked down to see the Waterfall Garden Park. The kids weren’t too interested – there was a pretty waterfall in the corner, but Bennett didn’t want a picture with it and there wasn’t much else for them to do. So we decided to venture over to the Klondike Gold Rush Museum – a free “national park extension” we had heard was neat, but we were a little skeptical about. We were partly just looking for a bathroom. The kids actually loved it – they got junior ranger booklets when we got there and loved the page with pictures of the artifacts to find & circle as we went through the museum. I actually had no idea why there was a Klondike Gold Rush Museum in Seattle, so I thought it was pretty interesting (mini history lesson: the people going up to strike it rich in the Klondike Gold Rush in Alaska usually stocked up on all their supplies and took a boat from Seattle as the first leg of their journey. This was a huge boost to the Seattle economy and some people came back after earning their fortunes).
